He was at the top. He was one of the greatest men alive, said some people. He had been married, with two children and a third on the way. He had been completely mentally sound, said his psychiatrist. He had money, power, everything a man could want. He was said to be handsome, kind, a truly good person.
The world had been so confused when the headlines said he committed suicide the night before. Foul play had long been ruled out, his house had security beyond most people's imagination, and his family was off on vacation. He was a well loved man, a man of stature, importance, and he was gone. The world seemed to sit still in shock.
Everyone asked one question. "Why?" He had everything, he wanted for nothing he could not obtain. Only one explanation seemed reasonable to the general public, a short statement from his psychiatrist:
The man was scared, scared of failure. He knew the top of the world, lived there, saw it daily. And he was scared to fall. It seems he wanted to die when he was happy, to never again know the sadness of defeat, of failure, of anything short of the excellence we all came to love in the man.
Of course, other theories jumped up on the internet. It was the Illuminati. He threatened to out them to the world, and they silenced him. One blogger posted. It was PTSD, from his stint in the military. He reportedly suffered from terrifying flashbacks and hallucinations, so much that his life was no longer worth living. Another said, although the man had never seen a military base, much less enlisted. Remarkably, the theories got more insane, convoluted, and bizarre from there. Eventually, the public consensus went  back to the psychiatrist's theory.
Perhaps he really was scared of failure. Once a man has everything, what else is there, but less? Once atop the pyramid of life, there is nowhere to go but down. Perhaps the man never wanted anything but the top, and leapt from the pyramid, forsaking the eternal struggle for power. The only problem was, he forgot that once you leap, the only place you can find yourself, is the bottom. This man figured out that lesson a little too late.
I assure you, the title is in no way meant to be dirty.
Anyway, got inspiration to do this after jokingly remarking to someone that it may have been better to die happily, instead of when sad. After considering that, this super short story is the result.
